Take out a stone from the wall, Intervention, January 2009

To attempt for eight months to temporarily remove a stone from the wall of the exhibition space.

La Capella de Sant Corneli in the town of Cardedeu is a small former pre-Romanesque chapel used as an exhibition space. For this solo show, I propose to change the position of one of the elements of the space, a stone. In doing so, I raise questions about what is possible. It mobilizes the institutions and inhabitants of the town.

I describe the process in an online diary in which the public can follow the story as it happens, culminating with the Heritage Committee refusing to extract the stone ‘to avoid distorting history.’

I ask Antonio Cruz, an illustrator who draws postcards of historic buildings in Catalonia, to produce a new postcard that recreates this story as a historical event. The postcard is on sale at several shops in the town.

The postcard is produced and distributed just if it is shown in an exhibition. If an institution wants to show the do so, it must follow a protocol to produce and distribute it.
